Does Luka's serve food? Are there items for vegetarians?
Yes, Luka's does serve food. We serve lunch Monday-Friday, dinner seven days a week and brunch on Sunday. Our goal is to be the best neighborhood restaurant in Oakland. Our menu inspiration comes from the brasseries of France and Belgium. In fact, we've taken to calling our style of cuisine "California Brasserie," which basically means that we've taken traditional French & Belgian brasserie dishes such as oysters, mussels, frites , sausages and cured meats, and put them together in a way that reflects the culinary sensibilities of the Bay Area.

Although we are not a vegetarian restaurant, we do strive to be inclusive. Our menu will always have some vegetarian options.

I work in the neighborhood, will I be able to go to Luka's for lunch or is it too fancy for lunch?
Oh heck no, we're not too fancy for lunch. I suppose we're more fancy than Quiznos, and we do offer some items from our dinner menu at lunch, but you can still come to Luka's and enjoy a sandwich or salad for a reasonable price and get back to the office before anyone misses you. If you can't get away from the office for more than 15 minutes, we have a portion of our menu available to go so you can phone in your order to pick up in a hurry.

Isn't downtown Oakland dangerous?
Many of us here in Oakland relish the outsider's perception of Oakland as a real-life version of Mad Max meets Cleopatra Jones. It gives us cachet in certain crowds. But the reality is that Oakland is just like San Francisco only a lot more pleasant, and the area around Lake Merritt is the nicest part of Oakland. Although we encourage everybody to check out all of the great bars and clubs in the neighborhood, those who don't want to wander around downtown will find ample parking within 1 block of Luka's (including our own 18-car parking lot), and those arriving by BART can take the train to within 2 blocks of Luka's at the 19th St. station. We have security personnel at the door, in the club, and in our parking lot.

Do you have music? What type?
Yes, we have music. Lots and lots of music. Luka's Lounge is a 1,200 square foot performance space and dance floor adjacent to Luka's Taproom. We are seeking out the best local musicians and DJs to play at Luka's Lounge. Oakland is so amazingly diverse that we've found talent that ranges from funk to punk, and from bhangra to be-bop and hip-hop and all shades in between - so the vibe will change from night to night. But, with our large dance floor and love of all things funky, you can bet that whatever you hear on any given night, it's likely to put your body in motion. Click here to check out our current schedule.

While we're on the subject of music, did I mention that Luka's has a pool room, and that in that pool room you will find the funkiest jukebox in all of Oakland? Our jukebox holds one hundred 45 rpm records and we have collected a tall stack of funky, funky, 45s for your listening pleasure (and a few country 45s for the less funky among us). A partial list of our 45 catalog will be available here soon.

What happened to the Hofbrau?
For those who don't remember, the Hofbrau was the previous restaurant in the building that Luka's took over. The Hofbrau had been in business continually from the 1950's until 2003.

We loved the Hofbrau and were sad when it closed its doors. We preserved a lot of the Hofbrau signs and art and display some of these treasures in the pool room at Luka's. We have donated the giant neon Hofbrau sign to the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles where it is now restored and displayed. We've also tried to preserve some of the Hofbrau spirit. After all, the Hofbrau was originally conceived as a place where a person could get a hearty meal and a beer at lunch for a reasonable price. We have hearty meals and reasonable prices - and we won't tell anyone if you have a beer with lunch.
